The Undy 5000

After a hiatus from running 5Ks (my last one was on July 15th) I've registered to run the Undy 5000 on October 27th!  Thank you to my reader, Lana, who alerted me to this awesome race to fight colon cancer.  The best part? Participants wear their underwear on the outside of their clothes. Sounds like a good time to me!  Anyone want to join me?

Too Hot To Handle 5K Wrap-Up

Today I ran the Too Hot to Handle 5K at White Rock Lake. Maybe it was because I was running with friends... or maybe it was the free 5-Hour Energy shooter that I was handed on the way in... whatever the reason, I had a marvelous time and ran a great race. I ran my personal best: 35 minutes and 53 seconds.

Here I am with some wonderful women - from left to right: Jacki (who inspired me to start running in the first place), Karri (this was her first ever 5K and she ROCKED it out!), Lacey (midwife extraordinaire who has recently dropped 30 pounds and started running) and me!  We have 13 children between the four of us and have collectively dropped a total of 144 pounds in the past two years! Today, we were super women.

One of my favorite parts about the race is walking to the start line. Everyone is smiling and nodding and back patting in anticipation of the race. And you get to see a little bit of everybody. The seasoned runner who signs up for 5Ks just to stay loose, the first timer who is tapping everyone they can find on the shoulder to say, "This is my first race!" and the running groups that are all wearing the same shirts.  Big, little, fat, fit, old, young, kids, dogs - we're all here to run a few miles together. It's pretty great.

And my least favorite part of races: the porta-potties.  I hate, hate, hate waiting in line to hover over a hole and pee before I run. But you have to do it. Its like a rite of passage or something. Plus, who wants to hit mile two, realize they can't make it to the finish without peeing and dash off course to find a bush. No one.

So there you have it.
The best and worst of my fourth 5K.

Another Awesome 5K

Today, I ran my third 5K!  My family and I attended Run the Highlands - a one mile fun run, 5K and carnival benefiting local schools in our neighborhood.  This was my son's very first race and he was a trooper!  I was so proud of him for keeping up with all his long-legged counterparts.  His brother, Charlie, had the advantage of being on wheels.

One of the things I love most about getting healthy and fit is sharing it with my kids.  When Walker grows up he won't remember the Pepsi chugging, doughnut downing, ball of lethargy that I used to be.  Instead he'll remember healthy happy meals at home, choosing his own produce from the market, running with me on race days, and playing in the child care co-op while I attend boot camp classes.  Today he told me, "You're the fastest runner I know, mommy."  Sweet little man.  Here he is below after receiving his medal for finishing the fun run!

I know that she will HATE me for including her photo here, but this beautiful woman below is the reason I started boot camp in the first place.  I met Ladonna for the first time at a mom's group in late October.  Our conversation went something like this:

Ladonna:  Oh god my arms.  I can't reach my margarita, I need a longer straw.
Me:  Why can't you reach it?
Ladonna:  Stupid boot camp.  My arms are sore from doing a million push ups.
Me:  Yikes.
Ladonna:  You should come with me.
Me:  To boot camp?
Ladonna:  Sure!
Me:  You make it sound so enticing.
Ladonna:  No, its really great.
Me:  I can't do it.  We only have one car.
Ladonna:  It's like a block from your house.  You could walk there.
Me:  Oh.  Well, I'm at home with the kids all day.  I don't have a sitter.
Ladonna:  There's a free child care co-op.  Bring them with you.
Me:  Oh. (Searching for another excuse...)
Ladonna:  Look - either you want to do it or you don't.  I'll email you the info.
Me:  I guess I don't have a reason not to go.
Ladonna:  Then come and you too can have crazy sore arms.

So thank you Ladonna for getting my ass in gear.  In return, I am in the process of inventing for you a very long bendy margarita straw for when your biceps give out after a difficult upper-body work out.

The other thing I did today was make more of these bad boys.  If you haven't read about them, click HERE.  They're super easy to make and super yummy to eat.  Walker calls them "sweet balls" and begs me for these dessert treats.  Just raw dates, raisins, nuts and a little dried coconut.  So good!

Weigh In - Week 45 (Warrior Queen Edition)

The weeks are closing in as June 1st approaches - almost a whole year since beginning my Smaller Sarah journey!  This week has been filled to the brim with activity, stress and joy.  My husband has been home from Barcelona for a week and life seems to be resuming a normal pattern.  Most of the weekdays were crazy and I was a weepy mess trying to stay on top of all my obligations.  The weekend, though, was better.  I hosted a party on Friday for Jack's SMU colleagues - a sort of welcome home get-together.  Saturday our family attended a dinner for Kenna's Kids, the non-profit organization that has chosen my son, Charlie, as one of their 2012 beneficiaries.  Then I finished the week with the Warrior Dash on Sunday morning!

As I stood in front of the bathroom mirror on Sunday morning examining the bags under my eyes, I thought, "What the hell am I doing?"  Then I popped two Aspirin, poured myself a cup of coffee and packed my bag for the battlefield.  Dread soon gave way to giddiness and in the end Warrior Dash was a fantastic experience.

The best part about doing the Warrior Dash was that I had a partner.  My boot camp instructor and dear friend, Mallory, picked me up on Sunday morning and ran the dash with me!  My goal was to run the entire 5K, which I did.  There was only one obstacle that was beyond my physical abilities, but I surmounted all the others with confidence.  The one I missed was a nine story wall with only a vertical rope to assist in scaling.  Okay, okay... it was NOT nine stories tall and there were little helpful foothold thingys, but seriously... when I started to climb, all I heard was the voice of comedian Wanda Sykes saying, "Oh nuh-uh girl.  That shit ain't happ'nin'."  I just didn't have the upper body strength to pull myself over that HUGE wall.  Ah well.

Do I feel different?  Hell yes.  Now I feel like Boadicea, Warrior Queen of the Britons.  I don't know if I can lead a Celtic revolt against the Romans, but I can certainly handle a rowdy (and sweet) four year old, a testy (and sweet) 20 month old with Cerebral Palsy, boot camp, and my various domestic duties as chauffeur, chef, event coordinator, financial planner, and family Chief Executive Officer.  So Mallory, thank you for running the dash with me and for spending the last five months (gently) whipping my ass into shape.  Here I am before and after the Warrior Dash:

Okay back to business.  It's Monday.  Time to weigh in.  I had a great week of exercise and a crappy week of eating.  I allowed stress and time-crunches to dictate my diet this week.  There were lots of coffee take-out trips, ice cream breaks and even cake.  I also drank a lot of beer and wine due to the weekend entertaining.  I have not dropped any weight, but I look and feel more toned than I have in over a decade.  The weight remains the same, but I'm still dropping dress sizes.  So overall, I'm pleased with how the week turned out.  My goal for next week is to resume my normal diet, which as you know, mostly entails saying no to refined sugar / flour and yes to veggies and raw food.

Pounds lost this week: 0
Total pounds lost: 65

Mallory and me before the race with fresh shiny clean faces.

Mallory and me after the race with our viking hats and medals.

We rocked the Warrior Dash!

All clean with my official tee-shirt!

And a shot of my knees and shins a few hours after the dash.  Ouch!

The "I Did It" List
attended 2 boot camp classes
took a run around my neighborhood
juiced 3 out of 7 mornings
completed the Warrior Dash in fifty something minutes
bought a pair of heels (my first in years)
wore my new size 16 jeans all week

Just Keep Going

Jack is back from Barcelona and back to work.  I thought that maybe I would have a little respite when he returned, but I think I was really kidding myself.  He's winding up the semester with his students and also completing his documentation and personal statement for tenure review this summer and fall.  Its a tall order and his time is not his own.

So I'm still exhausted, still waiting for the end of the school year and still holding down the fort.  All of this is markedly easier to do, however, when Jack is in the country and home at night.  So it is with a grateful heart and an exhausted mind that I move forward.

I'm nervous about my energy level while attempting to do the Warrior Dash this weekend.  In four short days I will be swimming through mud, running through sludge, climbing under barbed wire, scaling walls and jumping through fire.  Why?  Because it sounded like fun when I registered in February.  You're probably saying aloud, "What the hell was Sarah thinking?"  But the truth is these 5Ks and athletic markers are what keep me going right now.  Going to boot camp three days a week and doing a 1000 push up challenge and running the Warrior Dash are serving a much greater purpose in my life than I ever thought they would.  They keep me focused when all I want to do is throw away my calender and skip Charlie's therapy appointment.   They keep me grounded when all I want to do is drink a bottle of wine when the kids are down at 8pm.  And most importantly, they keep me connected to other moms going through the same shit as I am.  Its enlivening to reach for something you think you cannot do.  It doesn't even matter if you make it.  Pushing yourself and enjoying the ride is paramount.

Official Run for Human Rights Race Results

I just got the official results from my recent (and first ever) 5K race.  My time was much better than I thought it was: 37 minutes and 57 seconds.  Yay!  My goal was to run it under 42 minutes.  And here is a photo of me crossing the finish line.  Next up?  Warrior Dash on April 22nd and Run the Highlands 5K on April 28th.

5K - I did it!

I ran my first 5K race this morning at Bachmann Park in Dallas.  I'm happy to announce that I ran the entire way and came in somewhere around 42 minutes.  I'll know my real race time when they post them online.  I was excited to start the race, but I knew that I would be one of the slower participants so I positioned my self toward the middle back of the gathering crowd.

I was surprised though when we started that I seemed to be behind all of the walkers.  I didn't realize that there would be so many 5K walkers.  As soon as I began, I also had this overwhelming urge to go to the bathroom.  I kept thinking, "Oh great! I'll have to stop half way through and hunt down a bathroom".  I also had the unfortunate luck of swallowing a fly immediately after beginning the race.  I kept running and hacked a few times trying to dislodge the twitching bug at the back of my throat.  No luck.  Finally I just swallowed it down - runners love protein, right?   So after a 1/4 mile, I had a little space around me and was happily positioned with the slow runners, while trying to ignore my urge to pee.

I spent most of the race behind a sweet pair - a daughter, who looked to be about 10 years old, running with her dad.  Behind me was a group of runners who I knew were together because of their matching ball caps.  It was a Mom with a double stroller and a pregnant woman with a jogging stroller.  These two women were pushing three babies had had every manner of item strapped to their bodies and strollers: water bottles, iPods, picnic gear, plastic bags, diaper stuff, Mardi Gras beads and more.  They looked like the Joads heading west in their jalopy.

The volunteers were all very nice and one of them took a photo of me as I crossed the finish line.  I was surprised that there wasn't a lot of "Hey, good job!" or cheering or really any kind of motivating behavior from the on lookers.  Everyone was very chill, having their own conversations, looking up every once in a while to see if their friend or spouse was coming in to the finish.  It wasn't until the very end, a man in his 60's came running in the opposite direction - he clapped emphatically and yelled YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!  I smiled and said "thank you".  Then he yelled, BRING HER HOME!  And so I did - with a smile.

My family stayed home today for logistical reasons.  It was actually really nice to arrive alone, prepare alone and run alone.  Sometimes our biggest "you did it moments" happen in silence and only you and the asphalt know what you've accomplished.

5K Tomorrow

Tomorrow I will run my first ever 5K race.  I'm really excited and curious about how I'll do in a race environment.  When I signed up for this 5K in December, I couldn't even run a mile without stopping and walking to catch my breath.  I didn't really think, I'd make it to three plus miles by the end of March.  But here I am.  I've run 5K many times in the past month and I feel ready for the race!  I have two goals: to run the entire distance without walking and to beat 42 minutes.  I will be thrilled to accomplish either of these goals.

Wish me luck?
Any racing tips from my runner readers out there?

The Color Run

The 5K Color Run is coming to Dallas' Fair Park on February 19th.  I had no idea until now, otherwise I may have registered.  It looks like the happiest 5K on the planet.  Check it out!

Click HERE to see if the color run is coming to a city near you!

I'm still preparing for my 5K at the end of March.  This morning, I'm heading out to boot camp, which always helps me with endurance, strength training and short distance running and sprints.  And then I'll hit White Rock Lake on Sunday for another self-imposed 5K.  I love running on my own around the lake.  It's an incredible oasis in the middle of North Texas that transports me to another place.  When its cold and misty, it feels like Green Lake in Seattle.  When its warm and humid it reminds me of Winona, Minnesota.  The lake helps me to open my awareness to more than just the running and before I know it, I've finished five kilometers!

Morning Run

This morning, I went for a 5K run at White Rock Lake.  I started at 6:30am in the dark at a nice slow and steady pace.  It was such a joy to watch the morning rise over the lake.  I loved hearing the turtle doves, hoot owls, and loon-like birds start their morning chatter.  Now that I'm over the January gunk, I'd like to start running 5K once a week in preparation for my 5K race at the end of March.  I've never been a morning person, but running is something I'll definitely get up for.  Today, I ran 3.1 miles in 38 minutes.

Going the Distance

I did it.  I ran a self imposed 5K this morning on the trail at White Rock Lake.  Okay, okay... "ran" is a bit strong.  But I did jog.  I jogged a 5K in 40 minutes flat while pushing two children in a jogging stroller, which if you haven't done it, is sort of like pushing a 65 pound kitchen appliance on a tricycle.

Anyway, I'm totally pumped.  I jogged a 5K and I didn't die.  I didn't get gassed or pass out or throw up or stop short or get mad or yell at passers by when they looked at me like, "who are you trying to fool", which of course they weren't really thinking.  I just jogged and pushed my kiddos and listened to my iPod and smiled at the other joggers and when I was done I felt like I could have jogged some more!

I just registered...

...for my first 5K!

I'm running my first 5K, Run For Human Rights, on March 24, 2012.  I know that seems like a million years away, but for a person who just started running two months ago, its soon enough.  The 2nd annual Run For Human Rights will take place in Dallas, Texas at Bachman Lake Park.  The date coincides with the International Day for the Right to Truth, which was established by the United Nations to honor the memory of the victims of gross and systematic human rights violations, and to promote the importance of the right to truth and justice.

So I'm in.  The 5K is on!  Just the act of registering and paying my fee makes it real.  I never back out of anything that I've already paid for.   Oh, and thank you to my Dad who gave me some running shoes for Christmas!  I picked them out today and am now the proud owner of a pair of very supportive purple ASICS.

The Warrior Dash Pledge

I had not heard of the Warrior Dash until recently when my boot camp pals announced that they were going to start training for this event.  What is it?  Well, from what I understand it looks kind of like this...

It's basically a 5K obstacle course inspired by fire fighter training.  Except that instead of wearing fire safety and rescue gear, you dress up in tutus, head dresses and whatever silliness the entrant can dream up.

When I heard about the Warrior Dash, I suggested another variation called the "Mommy Dash" where the entrant wears an infant in a sling, a diaper bag and a shirt with spit up stains while carrying three grocery bags, a toddler, some hockey gear and a small dog.  Then the sherpa-like entrant would have to run through an enormous parking lot dodging oncoming vehicles, answer an important cell phone call from her boss, wipe everyone's noses with her own sleeve and fish a small cluster of keys from the bottom of her zipped diaper bag before safely delivering her children, pets and gear to a minivan.   I think the Mommy Dash would be a big hit.  However, I don't know if the men would make it.

All of this is to say, my boot camp pals invited me to join them in their Warrior Dash.  And as with so many key moments in my life, I was inspired by their enthusiasm and gusty bravado and said "yes".

Wait... is that... a picture of fire?
What the F#@K have I gotten myself into?

Running Shoes

Alright.  I'm on fire.  After running a mile yesterday morning with the boys in our new hand-me-down jogging stroller, I ran another mile at dusk while Jack hung out with the kids.  Two miles in one day?  I don't know what has happened to me - Ive gone bonkers.

So after jogging only four and a half miles in three days, its clear that I need some real running shoes - especially if I am going to run a 5K in March. The Sketchers I currently own are nice for power walking, but my ankles are pretty wobbly without the support of a real running shoe.  What to buy?  I have no idea.  I've never bought a pair of running shoes.  Any recommendations from my runner readers?  I like the look of the New Balance Rainbow Running Shoes below, but who knows how they'll perform?

...and P.S.  This morning, I made the yummiest, sweetest smoothie EVER.

2 bananas
heaping tablespoon almond butter
heaping tablespoon raw honey
heaping table spoon coconut oil
2 heaping tablespoons ground flaxseed

put all ingredients in Vitamix and cover with almond milk
Blend on high speed with big cup of ice

Pour and enjoy!

Still At It

My husband snapped a few shots of me heading out for my run this morning.  I haven't really posted any before and after photos here, so I thought I'd put these photos side by side.  Click on the image to enlarge it.  There is a 35 pound difference between the June photo of the photo taken today.  Yippee!

The big difference?  Instead of walking, I'm running.

5k here I come!

5K Crazy Talk

Alright, here it goes.  I'm going to run a 5K.  There.  I said it.  The week after I started boot camp, I started thinking about fitness goals.  I like the simplicity of attending class and working out just because I know it's good for me and yada yada.  But ultimately, I'm the kind of girl who needs a goal.  So, I'm going to run a 5K in March.

I have some runner friends who do 5K races as "fun runs" just to keep loose and in shape for their marathons.  But for me, a 5K would be an enormous challenge and an enormous feat.  So that's it.  I'm going to run a 5K this March and writing here on the blog makes it so.  Booyah.
